Bellator 97: From The Press Table

Round 1:

Through the first Pitbull is landing at will with heavy hands to the head of Jared Downing. Downing keeps working the clinch against the cage. Round 1 is definitely in the bag for Patricio Pitbull.

Round 2:

Jared opens the round throwing leg kicks but they are not landing. Patricio is landing at will with his straight right. Knock down one for Pitbull, knockdown two and then knockdown three. The ref has seen enough. Patricio Pitbull wins by TKO.

Ryan Martinez vs Vitaly Minakov

Round 1:

The starts off in the clinch against the cage with Minakov throwing short punches and looking for the inside trip. Martinez trips Minakov to the mat and Minakov quickly gets back to his feet. Martinez is finding some success with the overhands. Minakov gets Martinez to the ground. Back to their feet and Martinez lands a flush combo. Martinez is landing his combos and counters cleanly. Minakov clinches against the cage and lands a knee to the head. with twenty seconds left Minakov shoots for a takedown but is unsuccessful. Round one on our cards goes to Ryan Martinez 10-9

Round 2:

Martinez is once again finding success with his counter punches. Minakov takes the fight to cage and is utilizing his clinch game to land knees to the body. A low blow by Minakov brings a halt to the match and a point is deducted. As action resumes Minakov is more aggressive with his punches. Minakov lands a clean shot to Martinez' nose and Martinez is bleeding. Martinez lands a clean shot that briefly buckles Minakov. Round two goes to Ryan Martinez 10-8

Round 3:

Minakov opens the round pawing at Martinez but is getting countered  throughout the exchanges. Minakov trips Martinez to the ground agains the cage and is in 3/4 mount dropping punches. Minakov is turning up the pressure and picking his shots. Minakov gets the stoppage at  and wins by TKO.

Jacob Noe vs King Mo Lawal

Round 1:

Noe is starting off with leg kicks and is quickly taken down by King Mo. Noe is working his way back to the feet but King Mo is utilizing his wrestling very well to keep him on the ground.King Mo lets him up as the take the center of the cage. Mo shoots in with a huge takedown. Not too much action on the ground as the crowd begins booing. King Mo is picking his shots from half guard.in the closing seconds Mo lands a clean knee to the body on the ground. 10-9 King Mo

Round 2:

Jacob opens the round with leg kicks and punches but King Mo quickly takes him down and lands punches and elbows to the body. The round is remaining in this position with King Mo retaining control with a good pace. 10-9 King Mo

Round 3:

King Mo with a quick take down and works from the top. He lets Noe up and hits him with a hard jab cutting Noe. Mo gets the fight to the ground once again. He lands a few shots and the ref calls it off. King Mo wins by verbal submission at 2:51 of third.

Andrey Koreshkov vs Ben Askren

Round 1:

Askren moves in quickly and starts utilizing the head and arm whizzer to secure the takedown. Askren works in a guillotine and lets it go as he transitions to the back. Koreshkov works his way back to the feet but Askren gets him down and is working punches from the back. Askren works toward the RNC and transitions to the head and arm but loses it. He is on Koreshkov's back once again.  10-9 Askren

Round 2:

Askren shoots in and Koreshkov briefly threats to take the back but Askren regains control and transitions to mount then back control. Askren pops up on the back and shakes his fist at the crowd getting them behind him chanting "USA, USA." Askren is staying busy working for the rear naked choke. Askren has gained side control and is working toward the crucifix position. Askren achieves the position to finish out the round with punches to the head. 10-9 Askren

Round 3:

Askren with a quick takedown and gets the mount position. Askren transitions to back and then back to mount. This seems to be the tale of the fight as Askren continues to dominate utilizing control and not finishing submission attempts or with his striking.  Askren's pitter patter punches are drawing "Boos" from the crowd. Askren finishes out the round sitting up from back control. The guy behind me just said "Are you serious? This is a fu($ing five round fight?" LoL. Askren 10-9

Round 4:

Askren has finally finished a fight and there are mixed reactions from the crowd. The game plan was simple, control him until he couldn't take it anymore. Ben Askren retains his title winning by verbal submission.

David Rickles vs Michael Chandler

Round 1:

Chandler moves in quickly toward the center of the cage as Rickles fires counters. Chandler lands a clean shot and follows up finishing Rickles in under a minute. Chandler retains the lightweight title.

Russell Wilson vs Shawn Bunch

Shawn Bunch wins via split decision to remain undefeated.

Javier Palacios vs Richard Jacques

Round 1:

Palacios lands a flush right hand to knock Jacques to the ground. After gaining the mount he has spent majority of the round with an assault of ground and pound and transitioning back and forth from back control. 10-9 Palacios

Round 2:

After some brief exchanges on the feet, Palacios gets the fight to ground and gets the crucifix position. Palacios is dropping elbows and punches. Jacques reverses position for a brief amount of time and they come back to the feet. Palacios brings the fight back to the mat and fights for the Kimura lock but loses it. Jacques once again reverses position against the cage and jumps guard to finish the round. 10-9 Palacios

Round 3:

Palacios starts off the round with a nasty kick to the body. The two fighters are feeling each other out in the middle of the cage and looking for openings. Palacios lands a nice leg kick and gets tagged with a counter punch. Jacques is starting to push the pace but nothing is landing. Paacios jumps in with a quick three punch combo. Both fighters pump out stiff jabs and both land. With ten seconds left both fighters begin firing at one another. 10-9 Palacios   The winner on the official scorecards is Javier Palacios by unanimous decision 30-27 on all cards.

Adrian Cruz vs Felipe Chavez

Round 1:

Chavez lands a punch that caused Cruz to lose his balance. Cruz recovers quickly and gets the takedown. Cruz is working from the top with a few punches as Chavez continues moving from the bottom. Cruz gets the mount and then loses position ending back up in the full guard.  Cruz is staying active with the control but not landing anything of real significance. 10-9 Cruz for controlling the round.

Round 2:

Cruz starts off the round with a clean leg kick but gets caught with a counter. Cruz gets the quick take down near the cage. Chavez is threatening to get the back of Cruz and finally gets it. Cruz is able to turn into the full guard ending up on top landing a couple of elbows. Cruz is staying busy with short hammerfist. Not busy enough as the ref stands them up. Cruz rushes in with another quick takedown and secures mount. Cruz begins landing elbows and punches to the face at will eventually getting the referee stoppage. Cruz wins by TKO

Cliff Wright Jr. vs Donald Sanchez

Round 1:

After a quick touch of the gloves, Sanchez begins pushing the action moving forward and landing leg kicks. Wright fires back with leg kicks of his own. Wright secures a takedown but both fighters pop up to their feet quickly. The fight goes back to the ground as Sanchez threatens with an arm bar. Both fighters return to their feet and Wright secures a guillotine choke but loses it. Sanchez briefly has double under hooks against the cage but separates. Sanchez jumps for a guillotine from the clinch and loses it. Close round. Possibly a 10-10

Round 2:

Sanchez starts of the round aggressive landing his punches and backing his opponent up to the cage. Wright rolls for a quick leg lock and ends up on top in the scramble. As both fighters jockey for position Sanchez is able to reverse position and end up on top actively searching for submissions. Another scramble ensues and Wright ends up in Sanchez' guard and lands a punch that appears to have cut Sanchez. Sanchez continues searching for submissions but takes a few more punches as the round ends. 10-9 for Wright.

Round 3:

Sanchez comes out with a sense of urgency but catches a few punches. Sanchez returns fire and is landing with accuracy. Wright begins working for the takedown against the cage and  gets it.  Wright ends up in a bad bottom position as he rolls for another leg lock and loses it. Sanchez is controlling position now and takes the back of Wright. After another scramble Wright comes out on top and Sanchez throws up a triangle and threatens. The triangle is lost and Wright stands while Sanchez uses the heel hook to  reverse position and continues to threaten with subs to finish out the round. 10-9 Sanchez on our card.  The official winner is Donald Sanchez by split decision.
